Editor tabs
An Editor Tab edits text files inside tessoa, with line numbers, syntax highlighting and search. Opening a new editor tab requires a valid license.
Set the shared font, font size and line spacing for text previews and editor tabs under Settings → Appearance → Reading. See UI density and reading.
Open a text file
- Right-click a text file in the file list.
- Click Open in Editor Tab.
The file opens in a new editor tab. If the same window already has an editor tab for that file, tessoa switches to it. Files inside archives or in the Recycle Bin cannot be edited directly through this entry.
Editor tabs can be split into another pane with their tab group, moved to another group or dragged into a separate window. Unsaved content moves with the tab. Duplicating an editor tab is not supported.
Edit and save
After you change the text, a dot beside the tab title indicates unsaved changes. Once saving succeeds, the dot disappears and the status bar shows Saved.
| Action | Windows / Linux | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Save | Ctrl+S | ⌘+S |
| Find | Ctrl+F | ⌘+F |
| Undo | Ctrl+Z | ⌘+Z |
| Redo | Ctrl+Shift+Z | ⌘+Shift+Z |
| Select all | Ctrl+A | ⌘+A |
Wrap Long Lines in the right-click menu controls whether long lines wrap on screen and is enabled by default. Wrapping only changes the display; it does not insert line breaks into the file. The editor uses the global font size setting.
Saving preserves the original encoding, byte order mark (BOM) and existing line endings. New lines use the file's predominant line ending. Replace, Save As and changing the encoding are not currently available.
If another program changes the file on disk after it was opened, saving first asks for confirmation. Save anyway overwrites the newer content on disk. Cancelling keeps the current edits without writing them to disk.
Close and restore
Closing a tab, tab group, pane or window with unsaved content, or quitting tessoa normally, displays a save confirmation:
| Choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Save | Saves the current file and continues closing; Save All appears when several files are involved |
| Don't Save | Discards unsaved changes and continues closing |
| Cancel | Cancels closing so editing can continue |
Session restoration reopens the file paths. It does not restore unsaved drafts, cursor positions, scroll positions or undo history.
Save your work before switching, reloading or creating layouts, or restarting after importing settings; these operations currently do not prompt you to save. Unsaved content is also not restored after shutdown, sign-out or an unexpected exit. The save check for update restarts applies only to updates initiated from v0.27.1 or later. Save first when upgrading from v0.27.0.
If another program renames or moves the file, the editor tab does not follow its new path. If saving to the original path fails, copy the edited content to another editor to keep it.
Supported files and limits
Editor tabs only accept text files that can be saved in their original encoding without loss.
| Item | Supported range |
|---|---|
| UTF-8 | With or without a BOM |
| GB18030 | Files that can be decoded and encoded again without loss |
| UTF-16 | UTF-16 LE or UTF-16 BE with a BOM |
| File size | Up to 16 MiB |
| Line count | Up to 200,000 lines |
| Line length | Up to 10,000 Unicode characters |
Unsupported encodings, binary content and files over these limits display an explanation page. Click Open in default editor to use an external program. If the file no longer exists, click Close this tab.
