v0.28.2
v0.28.2 was released on 2026-10-08. This release adds an OpenGL graphics API on Windows and folder hiding in sidebar trees, improves favorites drag operations, Open With on macOS and file selection, and fixes text encoding, archive file names and startup issues.
For the change types (New / Improved / Fixed), see Changelog.
New
| # | Kind | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | New | Windows: When DirectX 12 cannot use hardware acceleration and only software rendering is available, tessoa tries OpenGL instead. Settings → System → Graphics API lets you choose Auto, DirectX 12 or OpenGL. Changes take effect after a restart; click Restart Now after changing the setting to apply it. |
| 2 | New | You can hide individual folders in the sidebar folder tree. Right-click a subfolder in the tree and choose Hide in Folder Tree. This affects only the folder tree; the folder remains visible in the file list. To restore it, choose Unhide Subfolders from its parent folder's context menu, or click × beside its entry in Settings → Visibility → Folder tree. |
| 3 | New | Folders can be dragged to a specific position in favorites. On the sidebar's Favorites page, drag between two bookmarks to insert there, or into the empty space below to append. Dragging onto a favorites folder on the quick bar opens its drop-down menu. You can add the folder inside it or insert it between two bookmarks in the menu. |
| 4 | New | macOS: The Open With submenu lists applications that can open the selected file, with their icons. The default application comes first, followed by the others in name order. Application names follow the system language. App Store… and Other… are added at the end. Other… opens the Choose Application panel, where you can check Always Open With. + Add a program lists applications in the Applications folder. |
OpenGL requires support from the graphics driver. If OpenGL is unavailable, tessoa continues to use DirectX 12. If OpenGL failed to start last time, the next startup falls back to DirectX 12. Select an option again in Graphics API, then restart to retry. With OpenGL, the system decides which graphics card is used, and the Graphics setting cannot be changed manually. With software rendering, this row shows Software rendering.
Improved
On macOS, use ⌘ instead of Ctrl for the shortcuts in this section.
| # | Kind | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Improved | Clicking a file or folder after selecting multiple items clears the other selections and selects only that item. Previously, a click only moved focus, leaving checked items included in subsequent operations. This behavior is enabled by default after upgrading. To restore the previous behavior, turn off Settings → Keyboard & Mouse → Mouse → Click Clears Other Selections. Clicking a checkbox or holding Ctrl while clicking still adds to the selection. Dragging a selected item still drags the whole selection. |
| 6 | Improved | After selecting an item with ↑ or ↓ in the filter field, press Enter once to open it, or Ctrl+Enter to open it in a new tab. Previously, the first Enter returned focus to the list, and a second press opened the item. If you only type filter text without selecting an item with the arrow keys, Enter still only returns focus to the list. Changing the filter text after selecting an item requires selecting again with the arrow keys. |
Fixed
| # | Kind | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Fixed | Fixes file and folder names beginning with Arabic or Hebrew appearing blank in file lists, Icons, Columns, Gallery, tab titles and the address bar. Long names now show the ellipsis on the left, preserving the beginning of the name. Lines beginning with these scripts in text previews are also now left-aligned. |
| 8 | Fixed | Fixes garbled previews and editor contents for non-UTF-8 text in Japanese, Russian, Traditional Chinese, Korean and other languages, and garbled file names in ZIP archives using these encodings. English text with curly quotes also displays correctly. tessoa now uses the system language and file contents to identify the encoding and preserves it when saving edits. Short Chinese file names in ZIP archives may still be misidentified when the system language is not Chinese. |
| 9 | Fixed | Windows: Fixes incorrect file names in ZIP archives created with File Explorer or 7-Zip on systems using Western European, Central European, Turkish, Greek, Baltic, Hebrew, Arabic, Serbian and other languages. For example, café.txt no longer appears as caf‚.txt. |
| 10 | Fixed | Chinese Windows: Fixes text saved in Notepad with ANSI encoding and containing the euro sign € being available only for preview and failing to open in an editor tab. These files can now be edited and saved with their original encoding. |
| 11 | Fixed | Fixes the This PC label at the start of the address bar, tab titles for This PC and similar pages, and drive types retaining the previous interface language after a language change. Also fixes the File System column on This PC incorrectly showing a folder label. These contents now update immediately when the language changes. |
| 12 | Fixed | Windows: Fixes garbled Chinese and other non-English file names in RAR archives, and archive entries failing to preview, when WinRAR is installed without 7-Zip. Extracting files with conflicting names now shows the conflict dialog instead of directly overwriting destination files. |
| 13 | Fixed | Windows: Fixes startup failing when the folder containing tessoa.exe also contains DLLs with the same names as system components, such as dwmapi.dll, dwrite.dll or uxtheme.dll. These components now load from the system directory. |
| 14 | Fixed | Fixes icons for .exe files, shortcuts and applications in the Open With submenu sometimes appearing only after the mouse moves. |
| 15 | Fixed | Fixes a bookmark moving to the end of its current level when dragged to the lower edge of the preceding bookmark. Also fixes a quick bar favorites folder's drop-down closing while the pointer moves slowly from the folder into the menu. |
| 16 | Fixed | Fixes Storage items entries in Settings → Visibility failing to highlight or show a hand cursor on hover. |
Downgrade notice
Downgrading to 0.28.1 or earlier loses the list of folders hidden in the folder tree, the graphics API selection and the Click Clears Other Selections setting. After upgrading to this release again, you need to hide those folders again. The graphics API returns to Auto, and Click Clears Other Selections returns to enabled.
