v0.28.0

v0.28.0 was released on 2026-10-05. This release adds column filters and lenses, component styles and a separate Tags column, improves deletion, copying within the same folder and sidebar tree following, and fixes data loss when handling paste conflicts.

For the change types (New / Improved / Fixed), see Changelog.

New

#KindChange
1NewDetails now has filter buttons beside column names. Click a funnel to filter the corresponding column by the first character of a name, date, type, size, folder count, file count or tag. The list shows counts for each option, and checking an option applies it immediately. Dates include modification, creation and access dates, with an additional date added on macOS. Type filters support the groups in File Types, and checking a parent tag includes its child tags. An item needs to match any checked condition within one field, and must match the conditions in every filtered field. These conditions also apply alongside the footer filter box.
2NewThe funnel in the footer filter box opens All filters, which also provides extension filters. The Active page lists the current conditions and lets you clear them individually. Save as lens… saves the global filters, filter text and matching mode. You can then apply them from Lenses, replacing the current conditions and clearing filters within groups. While filters are active, the footer shows a summary of the conditions and the number of displayed items. Clicking the close button clears funnel filters and keeps the filter text. Navigating to another folder clears the current filters, and restarting does not restore them. Saved lenses are retained, but filters within groups are not saved to lenses. Filters are unavailable on This PC and Recycle Bin pages.
3NewGroup headings now have a funnel for applying additional filters within that group, or choosing Show only this group. Columns headers and Gallery group headings also provide filter controls.
4NewThe sidebar quick search box now has a funnel for filtering search results. The results area shows a filter summary. Counts in the filter list reflect the current results, and type filters in search work by group only.
5NewSettings → Appearance now includes Component Style, which changes control fills, outlines, shadows and rounded corners. Alongside the default Flat style, you can choose Neumorphic, Glass, Wireframe, Native, Tonal or Brutalist. All styles follow the current theme's colors. Selecting a style displays its description.
6NewNeumorphic provides Tint Strength and Follow Theme Lightness. These adjust how much of the theme's hue the background retains, and how closely its lightness follows the theme. Tonal provides Surface Tint, which adjusts the accent color's influence on interface backgrounds. Setting it to 0 uses the theme's original backgrounds.
7NewDetails and Columns now have a separate Tags column that displays file categories as colored tags. When space is limited, it shows the number of remaining tags; hovering shows the full hierarchy. Clicking a tag opens the picker. When you do this on a checked file, tag changes apply to all checked files. This column supports sorting and is shown by default on new installations. With an existing configuration, right-click a header and check Tags to show it. While this column is shown, tag dots beside file names are hidden.
8NewWindows: Type a server name or IP address in the address bar, such as \\server, to open its server page and browse shared folders. Hidden shares ending in $ follow Show Hidden Items; printer and device shares are not listed. Going up from a share's root first returns to the server page and selects that share, then returns to This PC. Servers are accessible from breadcrumbs and can be pinned to Places in the sidebar. If credentials are required, first connect in File Explorer and save the credentials. tessoa does not yet provide a sign-in dialog. Menu entries for deleting, cutting or renaming an entire drive or share are disabled and explain why.
9NewmacOS / Linux: The context menu in empty space in the file area now has a New submenu. It offers folders, text documents, Markdown, RTF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and items from the templates folder. Among the preset options, file types other than folders and text documents appear only when a local application can open them. A newly created item is selected and enters rename mode. Creating files and template items can be undone. Open Templates Folder… opens the template location: ~/Library/Application Support/tessoa/Templates on macOS, and the XDG templates directory on Linux.
10NewmacOS: The new Date Added and Added Age columns record when a file was placed in its current folder. You can show these columns by right-clicking a header, or sort by date added while the columns are hidden. This timestamp is available only on local APFS / HFS+ drives that support it.
11NewMiddle-clicking a file opens its containing folder in a new tab and selects the file. The file context menu also provides Open Containing Folder in New Tab. If you have configured a middle-click action in File Types, that action still takes precedence.
12NewThe rename field now supports a context menu with Cut, Copy, Paste and Select All. Right-clicking outside the field while renaming first commits the name, then opens the menu for that location.
13NewHolding Shift (⌥ on macOS) while deleting through the context menu or Quick Bar changes the action to permanent deletion. tessoa still asks for confirmation before proceeding.
14NewThe License page now provides Buy a License when tessoa is not activated. It opens the purchase page on the official website.

Component style appearance

The main differences between the styles are listed below.

StyleAppearance
FlatUses solid, flat surfaces without shadows or relief.
NeumorphicBackgrounds and controls share one surface color, with raised buttons and recessed fields and selected controls.
GlassThe tab bar, address bar, sidebar, footer and pop-up menus have a frosted-glass effect. File lists and previews remain solid.
WireframeUses square corners and thin outlines without shadows. Selected or switched-on controls use inverted colors.
NativeUses Windows 11-style small rounded corners, thin outlines and light control surfaces.
TonalDerives a set of tones from the accent color, with light tonal pills for selected or switched-on controls.
BrutalistUses thick outlines and unblurred shadows, with solid accent-colored blocks for selected or switched-on controls.

Window Material has no effect in Neumorphic, Glass, Tonal and Brutalist styles, and its settings are hidden. The existing settings are retained and take effect again when you switch to Flat, Wireframe or Native. Neumorphic, Glass, Native and Tonal hide the Tab Outline and Tab Outline Width settings. Wireframe uses square corners and hides the corner roundness setting.

Neumorphic adjusts the lightness and saturation of custom theme backgrounds, and the pop-up background and separator settings have no effect. Glass uses solid colors when transparency is disabled in the operating system. The corresponding macOS system option is Reduce transparency.

Warning

Checked files hidden by filters or the filter box are still included in deletion, copying and dragging. The footer shows how many checked files are hidden. Review the checked items before proceeding. Clearing the filters and filter text lets you see these files.

Improved

#KindChange
15ImprovedWindows: Before deleting, tessoa identifies items that cannot go into the Recycle Bin. These include files that exceed its capacity, are in a location without a Recycle Bin, or are on a drive with the Recycle Bin disabled. tessoa asks whether to delete these items permanently, with cancel selected by default. The remaining items still go into the Recycle Bin as usual. Permanent deletion cannot be undone. Previously, one file that could not go into the Recycle Bin could cause the whole batch to fail with system error 1223.
16ImprovedCopying and pasting within the same folder now creates numbered copies directly, without showing the name conflict dialog. Numbering follows Keep-both numbering. Copies are created even when the conflict policy is set to always replace or always skip.
17ImprovedFollow Current Folder in Tree now has separate switches for Recents, Favorites, Storage and Places, all enabled by default. Each group expands from its shortest root path to the current folder. Switching sidebar tabs or expanding a group also locates the current folder. Clicking an expand arrow affects only that node.
18ImprovedWindows: When tessoa is behind other windows, pressing and holding a file no longer brings its window to the front immediately. You can drag the file directly into a chat or browser window above it. If you release without starting a drag, tessoa then comes to the front. Clicking empty space still activates the window immediately.
19ImprovedCompress to ZIP, Compress to 7z and Compress to… are now in a Compress submenu. The original entries' order, visibility and accelerator key settings are assigned to Compress. macOS also uses this submenu. Built-in ZIP compression does not yet preserve file executable permissions.
20ImprovedThe beta feedback entry in Settings has been renamed to Feedback Survey.

Fixed

#KindChange
21FixedFixes selecting all in a text preview and copying only the loaded portion. Selecting all with a shortcut or the context menu, then copying, now reads the complete original text and preserves tabs, very long lines and line endings. Copied full text appears when copying finishes. Files larger than 64 MB are not copied, and a message explains this limit. Dragging to select part of the text still copies the content as displayed on screen.
22FixedFixes numbered copies taking a name used by another source file when choosing Keep both for the same batch. For example, when pasting A and A (2) together, the copy generated for A no longer takes the name A (2).
23FixedFixes the original contents of a destination file being lost when replacement fails or is canceled. The destination file is now replaced only after the new contents have been written completely.
24FixedFixes choosing replace when pasting into the same folder reducing a file to 0 bytes, and merging a folder into itself clearing its contents.
25FixedFixes undoing a folder merge also deleting the destination folder's original contents. Undo now removes only the items added by that paste.
26FixedFixes the second of two cut items with the same name overwriting the first when both are moved to the same location.
27FixedFixes replacement writing to the file a symbolic link points to when the destination is that link.
28FixedFixes tooltips covering the details panel's docking buttons. Hovering a docking button shows where the panel will dock.
29FixedFixes disabled context menu entries using the same color as available entries, and corrects the colors of available and unavailable reorder arrows in batch rename rule cards.
30FixedFixes full file name tooltips outside an open context menu covering the menu. File information cards also no longer cover context menus opened while renaming.
31FixedWindows: Fixes files dragged in from applications such as WeChat showing a prohibited cursor and being unable to drop into tessoa.
32FixedmacOS: Fixes files dropping back into tessoa when dragged onto a window above tessoa and released there.
33FixedFixes the Quick Bar button for opening Settings having no icon or failing to respond. The buttons for editing the path, focusing the filter box and focusing sidebar search also respond correctly.
34FixedFixes the sidebar tree's loading indicator sometimes continuing to spin and keeping the interface refreshing.

Downgrade notice

Warning

Back up the configuration folder before downgrading. Versions 0.27.1 and earlier cannot retain Component Style, Tint Strength, Follow Theme Lightness or Surface Tint settings. Downgrading restores the Flat style, and you need to configure these settings again after upgrading.

Older versions cannot recognize column width records that include the new columns. Column widths you adjusted manually in each tab return to automatic sizing. The Tags column is removed, and you need to show it again from the header after upgrading. Tabs sorted by tags or macOS date added return to the default sort order.

The sidebar tree's per-group following switches are also lost. All four groups are enabled when you upgrade again. Saved lenses are stored separately in lenses.ini, which older versions do not read or modify. They remain available after upgrading again.

See Where settings live for the configuration folder location. Exit tessoa normally before copying the backup so that the current session is saved.
