v0.25.0

v0.25.0 is a tessoa release published on 2026-09-14. This page covers transfers between tabs, combined tag views, settings backup and a settings tour, sidebar columns, and updates to lists and interaction.

The kinds of change (New / Improved / Fixed) are explained on the Changelog page. Shortcuts on this page use Windows / Linux notation; on macOS, replace Ctrl with ⌘.

New

#KindChange
1NewCopy to ▸ / Cut to ▸ in the file context menu lists this window’s open tabs by tab group. Choose a destination to copy or move the selection without changing the clipboard. Hovering over a group or tab highlights it on screen. With one group, tabs appear directly; unavailable destinations, such as the current folder, are disabled with a reason.
2NewCombine tag views. Ctrl-click a sidebar tag to add it to the current view, or remove it if already included. Files matching any included tag appear together, with each path shown once. The tag context menu offers Add to Current Tag View and Remove from Current Tag View. Titles and breadcrumbs follow the order of addition; going back undoes the last addition. At least one tag remains.
3NewExport Settings… / Import Settings… under Settings → System → Backup saves preferences such as themes, shortcuts, favorites, menu order and columns to one file. Import first backs up current settings in the configuration directory, then restarts tessoa to apply the import and shows a confirmation. Open tabs, licenses and plugins are excluded.
4NewSettings Tour (experimental) is the third item in the top-left menu. A demonstration interface that cannot operate on real files appears beside settings on the right. Orange badges list settings for each area: hover to expand the list and click to jump to a setting. Purple badges preview context menus. Regular settings still open in the center with Ctrl+Shift+P; the tour has no shortcut.
5NewSettings are reorganized from seven categories into ten, in four sections: Window, Content, Interaction and This Computer. The left column uses cards with section colors and category icons; settings within each category are grouped into cards. The former Appearance subpage is incorporated into its category. Sliders put the label and value above a separate track.
6NewDetails view gains Date Created and Date Accessed columns, hidden by default. Enable them from the column-header context menu.
7NewAge is split into Modified Age, Created Age and Accessed Age. Each pairs automatically with its matching date column when adjacent: they join seamlessly, the headers are connected, and the Age header uses a short label. Drag the date header to move the pair, or drag Age to move it alone. Pairing automatically fits both widths to their contents; widths remain adjustable. Settings → List → Age Badge Marker offers Auto, Always and Never modes.
8NewThe header context menu offers Align left, Center and Align right for the current column, and All columns left, All columns center and All columns right for all columns. The Name column is excluded. This PC uses left alignment by default.
9NewCopy Name in the multi-selection context menu copies file names to the system clipboard, one per line.
10NewConfirm Before Deleting under Settings → Operations is off by default. Enable it to confirm before Delete or the Delete context-menu action moves items to the recycle bin. Either way, deletion uses the recycle bin and supports Ctrl+Z; permanent deletion always requires confirmation.
11NewHighlight Full Row under Settings → List is off by default. Selection and checkmark highlights in Details view now cover only the icon and file name. Dragging within the highlight drags files; dragging in the blank space beyond it starts a selection rectangle. Hover still highlights the whole row. Enable the setting to restore full-row selection highlighting.
12NewAn Update button appears at the top right, to the left of Activity, when a new version is available. Click it to open the update interface; it is absent when no update is available.
13NewSidebar tab strips for Favorites, Recents, Places and Storage gain a Collapse All button at the right when items are expanded.
14NewWith multiple tab groups and numbered badges visible, the focused group gains a focus ring around its badge.
15NewWindows: creating a file from the system context menu immediately starts renaming it, as in File Explorer.
16NewWindows: folders display localized names from desktop.ini, so system folders such as Documents and Pictures match File Explorer. Names on disk are unchanged. Press F5 after editing desktop.ini to refresh the display.
17NewReopen Closed Tab with Ctrl+Shift+T, or from the context menu of a tab or empty tab-bar space. It restores the folder, view, sorting and navigation history to its original tab group if it still exists, or the current group otherwise. Tabs from a closed split can be reopened individually. The last 20 closed tabs are kept until restart; normal session restoration still restores tabs left open when quitting.
18NewSide-by-side sidebar columns. Widen the sidebar enough for at least 140 px per column, then drag a sidebar tab to the left or right edge of a pane’s content area. Vertical dividers resize columns; each column supports stacked and collapsible panes. A column disappears when its last tab leaves. Layout and widths survive restart. When the sidebar is too narrow, dragging retains the existing merge or vertical split behavior.

Improved

#KindChange
19ImprovedBookmarks are now called Favorites throughout the sidebar, menus, settings and shortcut names. Existing data is unchanged.
20ImprovedScrollbars no longer cover content across lists, sidebars, tab bars, Columns view and settings. Selected rows and text stop before the scrollbar area.
21ImprovedThe tab bar’s horizontal scrollbar can be dragged when tabs overflow, and becomes thicker on hover or while dragging.
22ImprovedEnabling a column automatically runs Size columns to fit window once so the new column is visible. Hiding a column does not resize the others. Header-divider hit areas are twice as wide for easier resizing.
23ImprovedDeletion confirmation dialogs follow the Open / Activate and Cancel / Clear key bindings configured in settings.
24ImprovedClicking empty space in a sidebar pane’s tab strip collapses or expands it. The collapse triangle is larger, and the pointer becomes a hand over clickable empty space. The narrow gaps between tabs do not toggle the pane.
25ImprovedWhen all sidebar panes are collapsed, dragging a tab into the empty space below creates an expanded pane at the bottom. The destination highlights while dragging.
26ImprovedSidebar dividers next to collapsed panes can be dragged. Dividers work across intervening collapsed panes, whose tab strips move with them. Drag far enough toward a collapsed pane to expand it; shrink a pane to its tab strip to collapse it and give its space to the opposite pane. Dividers remain inactive when every pane is collapsed.

Fixed

#KindChange
27FixedWindows: Properties in the folder-background context menu now opens the current folder’s properties instead of doing nothing.
28FixedWindows: windows opened by system or third-party context-menu extensions no longer sometimes fail to appear or disappear immediately.
29FixedScrolling with the pointer over a context menu no longer closes it, even if the menu fits without scrolling. Scrolling outside the menu still dismisses it.
30FixedIn Columns view, multi-selection with Ctrl or Shift in an inactive column now focuses that column, so the context menu and subsequent actions apply to all selected items instead of only one.
31FixedBringing tessoa to the foreground with Win+E or Alt+Tab no longer treats keys still held down as new input. This prevents the list filter from opening unexpectedly or shortcuts firing on focus changes. Only keys pressed after switching back count as input.

Downgrading

Warning

Downgrading discards some new preferences. Version 0.24.x and earlier ignore column alignment, Age Badge Marker, Highlight Full Row and Confirm Before Deleting, and remove them when writing config.ini. These preferences return to their defaults after upgrading again. Existing favorites, tags and shortcuts remain available.

Older versions also do not support the new session state: side-by-side sidebar columns merge into one column; tabs sorted by Date Created or Date Accessed return to default sorting; combined tag views are treated as ordinary paths and cannot open. For the last case, click a tag in the sidebar to reopen a tag view.
